Jewish cultural monuments in the Czech Republic are in bad repair speaking about those beyond the borders of the Prague city. Many rare objects have been destroyed for lack of interest and no maintenance. One of the last rustic synagogues - the oldest preserve Jewish sanctuary of South Bohemia - is in Čkyně near the town Vimperk, 20 km far from borders with Germany (Strážný crossing). The municipal corporation managed to get the building (it used to be stores there) but the reconstruction will claim several millions. That was why the Company for the Jewish Synagogue in Čkyně Restoration has been launched. Our aim is to restore the building and house the Museum of Jewish Culture of South Bohemia there, and a centre of culture for wide surroundings. Our Jewish cemetery is one of the best in the country and an old mortuary here is a monument of victims of nazism. Together with the synagogue it could be a site of interest and tourism one day.
